Black History Month Celebrations
Black history and culture is such a part of the American fabric and schools are continuing to incorporate events and activities to supplement and celebrate the rich history and place value on diversity. Established as Negro History Week in the 1920s by Carter G. Woodson, February was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans. The African-Caribbean Dance Theater presented students at Springwood Elementary with not only a musical and artistic performance, but also educated students on the instruments and their official names and craftsmanship.
